Two Atkins Library Staff Members awarded ALA Scholarships

Recently, the American Library Association (ALA) awarded scholarships to two J. Murrey Atkins Library staff members for the 2008-2009 Academic year.  Denelle Eads and Melinda Livas were recognized with scholarships to help with their studies in pursuit of a Masters in Library Science.  Details are below:

Denelle Eads

Denelle Eads was named the 2008 recipient of the Tony B. Leisner Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship, named for Tony B. Leisner, an active ALA member and former member of the ALA Council, is awarded to a library support staff member pursuing a master’s degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was established with funds donated by Leisner.

Denelle currently works in Special Collections at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Atkins Library where she provides service to patrons in such areas as manuscript, rare books, university archives and oral history collections. She plans to continue working in Special Collections after earning her degree.

Her interest in the field of library and information science came from her time at the Atkins library. As a circulation desk clerk, Denelle’s responsibilities included serving patrons with materials and checking out equipment.

“My experience as a library circulation desk clerk was a blessing, because it helped me discover a career that fit perfectly with my background, work experience and interests,” Denelle said.  She is pursuing her Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Melinda Livas was named as a recipient of a 2008 Spectrum Scholarship.

The $5,000 scholarship aims at recruiting applicants and awarding scholarships to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students for graduate programs in library and information studies.

Its mission is to improve service at the local level through the development of a representative workforce that reflects the communities served by all libraries in the new millennium. Since 1997, the ALA has awarded a total of 564 Spectrum Scholarships. Nearly 70 percent of past Spectrum Scholars remain active in the ALA three years after graduation.

Melinda works in Course Reserves providing assistance to patrons and scanning materials to be placed on electronic reserve.  "I thoroughly enjoy helping information seekers find what they need," Melinda states.   "That is one reason why I have chosen to pursue an MLIS degree, plus the professional opportunities within this field are endless. I have always been drawn to libraries. An MLIS degree will provide me the necessary skills to morph into a techno savvy, website searching guru, in other words a 'Librarian'".  Melinda plans to work in an academic library after completing her MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and focus in the area of library instruction.
