International Visitors Welcomed by Library's Information Commons Unit

Atkins Library has received global recognition for its Information Commons unit over the past few years, recently welcoming Japan’s University of Tsukuba, which is developing its own Information Commons area. Mike Olson, Associate University Librarian for Information Commons, remarked “our staff feels very honored that librarians from the University of Tsukuba picked Atkins Library as one of the three Information Commons to visit during their trip to the United States.”

Today’s learning atmosphere at the J. Murrey Atkins Library includes beautiful, innovative and evolving spaces for study, research and discovery. The Information Commons unit embraces this design as Atkins’ “one-stop-shopping” space for information in a high-tech environment. Patrons can receive expert staff assistance in three main areas: (1) Information search and retrieval (2) Processing and interpretation of this information (The Research/Reference Desk for both of these areas) and Packaging and presentation of the information (The Technology Support Desk).

With language interpretation provided by Shoko Tokoro, Atkins’ Cataloging Librarian, the day long visit proved extremely valuable and enriching to all parties. Their visit included a tour of the library and campus, as well meetings with Information Commons Staff members for greater understanding of the learning concept, implementation and its strategies. For more information about Atkins Library’s Information Commons, please go to http://library.uncc.edu/infocommons or contact Mike Olson molson8@uncc.edu. Special Collections' Katie McCormick Selected for Archives Leadership Institute

UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library is proud to announce that Katie McCormick, Assistant University Librarian for Special Collections, has been selected to attend the Society of American Archivists’ Archives Leadership Institute.  Being one of only 25 archivists selected from a pool of 90 applicants, Katie will attend this week-long event, hosted by the University of Wisconsin’s School of Library & Information Studies.

The event goal “is to examine the leadership needs of the archives profession and to prepare participants to influence policy and effect change on behalf of the profession (and ultimately, on behalf of the public served now and in the future)”.

Katie looks forward to participating and believes, “it will be a great opportunity to learn from leaders in the field, to problem solve with colleagues and to have focused time to consider the broader implications of archival work”.  Her experience will certainly benefit UNC Charlotte’s rich Special Collections unit, currently including more than 8,500 rare books, 1500 oral history interviews, 4 million manuscript items and 1.4 million items in the University Archives.
