How to Identify Scholarly Articles

Types of Materials:

Many professors require students to use scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles rather than popular magazines. Some databases make this distinction for you; others do not.

Check with your professor before starting your research.

 Scholarly

Scholarly Journal Articles – These journals are written by academics / scholars for academics / scholars. They are published by academic and/or scholarly organizations.

Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles – These go through an additional review process. They are written by academics / scholars for academics / scholars. However, articles are reviewed by experts (peers) in the field before they are accepted for publication.

 Not Scholarly

Trade/Professional Journal Articles - Written for and by people in specific industries or professions.

Popular Magazine Articles – These are written for the general public and do not go through any peer-review process. You can buy these magazines at the grocery store, newsstand, etc. Newspaper articles are also considered popular.
